GATC Objectives
- Make available to the University a high quality, cost effective, state-of-the-art core facility that is equipped and staffed to perform and teach molecular techniques applicable in several fields. The success of this objective may be assessed by an evaluation process taking into consideration comments by lab users and outside consultants.
- Provide workshops and other educational opportunities as appropriate to maximize access and effective use of current molecular techniques. The topics of workshops to be offered will depend on user demand which will be determined through campus-wide surveys. The success of the training will be judged through evaluations by participants, the number of different departments served and the achievement of previously established goals for the total number of workshops and topics taught.
- Develop and/or implement appropriate new technologies as they become available or are needed. The pertinence of new technologies will be determined through a combination of campus and literature surveys, consideration of expert opinions from staff and colleagues in other laboratories, and through insights resulting from basic research performed in the GATC. The new technologies will be made available to users through workshops and one-on-one training.
- Develop and implement an outreach program to make the facilities and workshops available to state agencies, the private sector, and developing countries (Mexico) to facilitate the use and understanding of molecular biotechnology. Future consideration will be given to the possibility of special workshops for high schools and exporting technology that would be appropriate for the high school classroom.
- Perform basic research in the area of interest of the director to sustain the intellectual growth of the (relevant) staff, maintain their proficiency in the application of current technology, and aid in the awareness of the need for new technologies in basic research.
- Provide a training program for undergraduates in the areas of basic research, R&D and laboratory administration.
